Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” will get a theatrical release in China at the end of this month.
The film will be given a release though state-controlled distributors on Jan. 30, according to sources at Universal.
The film details the life of former Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini, who was captured and tortured by the Japanese during WWII, and his extraordinary tale of survival at sea.
As such it looks set to play strongly to popular anti-Japanese sentiments within the Chinese public.
The film was released on Christmas Day in North America where it has grossed $92 million. It has so far grossed $6 million in a more limited international release. The film has been widely criticized in Japan and will not be released there.
